Day 2 – Cetina River: The Most Beautiful Gem in Dalmatia

An unpolished gem in the hinterland of the famous Dalmatian coast, the Dalmatian hinterland is a place rich in history and natural beauty, ideal for an active vacation and enjoying isolation away from the busiest tourist spots. Visitors will find it fascinating to see the oldest Old Croatian church of St. Spas, located near the source of the Cetina River, considered almost untouched nature along the canyon of the Cetina River, which has enjoyed the status of a protected natural landscape since 1963, making it an ideal destination for all lovers of active recreation. Just imagine the fresh air with the chirping of birds and the murmur of the river, mysterious caves, incredible Dalmatian mills, swimming in the crystal-clear river, a view of unique flora and fauna, dense forests, and lots of adrenaline.

The church is a significant monument in domestic and European sacred architecture. According to preserved sources, this beautiful building was built by Duke Gostih and his sons with mother Nemira in the second half of the 9th century. Around the church, a large medieval cemetery with tombstones dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries has been discovered.

Day 3 – Zrmanja River: The Two-Headed Karst Dancer

Beauty always has two faces, and so does Zrmanja, which is said to have two flows, one of which is invisible. It has two mouths, and it’s even a river that sees its end twice in the same course. At its estuary, there are two types of water… Duality is its energy, and its beauty is almost fatal.

In the village of Zrmanja Vrelo, situated, like most beautiful places in Croatia, in the middle of nowhere – after leaving your car in someone’s meadow, next to an old building, an oasis begins.

You still need to walk about a couple of hundred meters until you are mesmerized by the gentle murmur that develops beneath the 200-meter-high cliffs of Misije. These are the rocks beneath Mount Poštak under which Zrmanja is born, and at its source, a dam was built in 1924 (a hollow bridge that you can climb and from which water gushes).

Day 4 – Jadro River: The Source of Life

The Jadro River originates at the foot of Mount Mosor in the village of Majdan at an altitude of 35 meters, is approximately 4.5 kilometers long, and flows into the Adriatic Sea in the town of Solin. Jadro is a typical karst river that springs from the underground. Its importance was known to the ancient Illyrians and Romans who built cities at its estuary, such as Salona, and used aqueducts to bring water all the way to Diocletian’s Palace in today’s Split. Due to its significant influence on life, it has been named the Croatian Jordan.

Day 5 – Čikola River: Water Beauty

The Čikola River originates at the foot of Mount Svilaja near the hamlets of Mirlović Polje and Čavoglava. The source consists of two small lakes (lake sources). In the summer months, they can dry up significantly, allowing entry into a small cave with a constant water supply. Near the source itself, there are privately owned mills, somewhat restored. In the first part of its course, Čikola peacefully winds through the idyllic, rich, and fertile Petrovo Polje, surrounded by high mountain massifs—Mount Moseć, Promina, and Svilaja. In the Čikola Canyon, in the caves near Brina, stone tools dating back to the Neolithic period have been found. In the later Iron Age, the Illyrian tribe of Delmati settled the area of present-day Drniš and its surroundings.
